Summer is the time for fun, hiking, soaking up some sun, and of course, sweating. So much God damn sweating. If you wear shorts, you risk sticking to a plastic chair more completely than glue sticks to paper.
Well, lots of sweat means hydration is absolutely key to preventing headaches, fatigue, and the horrible summer day slump where you simultaneously want to kill everyone and take a nap.

But simply drinking water isn’t effective. To properly hydrate you need your salts. Sweat is salty. And of course, by salts, I mean electrolytes, so don’t go drinking the ocean.
Symptoms of Dehydration
Even mild dehydration can cause a lot of negative responses in your body. Besides feeling thirsty, there are a lot of subtle cues that let you know that you need to drink some of this refreshing watermelon drink recipe.
And the fun thing is, some of the symptoms are so prevalent in our lives and affect is so poorly that you’ll finally have a simple solution to finally get your life together…supposedly.
And if you’re sitting there thinking, “Angel, I don’t workout or play sports, I highly doubt I’m dehydrated….so this drink isn’t going to be life changing”, hear me out.
Many people are mildly dehydrated sitting at a desk or on the sofa. When we work out, it’s much easier to remember to hydrate. It’s just the thing to do.
But sitting at work? Relaxing in the yard? Or stuck on the cozy couch? Yeah, you still can be dehydrated and can still suffer from all of these things.
Some might say you’re just always a cranky person, I say perhaps you’re just never fully hydrated.
God knows that when I’m feeling moody (which tbh is often) a cool glass of water or even this watermelon refresher, I immediately become less cranky.
I like to picture my body’s cells are small little people wondering if they’ll survive this current drought that is my dehydrated body. As I sip some water I think about how they all cheer to the sky as rain falls and they can finally get back to work.
Everyone rejoices, my body’s world is functioning again.
Also I’m weird but it’s an effective mental image, amirite?
Lack of Concentration
Things just don’t run smoothly without plenty of water. I mean, we’re already 70% water, so when we’re a bit low, we’re suffering like a grape left to raisin.
And since our brain needs SO much water to work properly, focus is hard when you’re thirsty.
Caffeine can make dehydration worse, so try the watermelon drink recipe or something similar during your afternoon brain crash before you reach for the coffee beans.
Get your water levels and electrolytes back up and watch how magically productive you become!
I think we’re all pretty familiar with this one. If not, cry for an hour and a half like we would in middle school when some dude named Chad turned out to be an asshole.
Massive headache, right? (From the crying in this case, although Chad was probably quite the headache too).
When you’re dehydrated, you’re body has to work twice as hard. Working twice as hard means you’re expending more energy.
Expending more energy makes you more tired.
Anxiety + Depression
While many things contribute to anxiety levels, dehydration is a big one that we rarely consider.
Dehydration causes you’re body to go into stress mode, releasing stress hormones while reducing the production of serotonin. It’s not good.
And if you’re dehydrated, you are more likely to have a panic attack and as someone who has suffered from her fair share of those, I can tell you….anything that reduces the chance for a panic attack is worth doing.
SO FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN YOUR LIFE…. STAY HYDRATED!
Hydration keeps everything running…..smoothly….do I need to say more?
A lack of water makes it difficult for your liver and other organs to properly release stored glucose when your body needs fuel, hence craving more sugar. (source).
When your cells don’t have enough water, your body has a hard time expelling waste. This means that that waste will begin to cause inflammation in your body which can result in bloating, upset tummies, minor swelling, and things like puffy eyes.
As with inflammation, cramps happen from dehydration for all sorts of reasons, not limited to waste build up.
Electrolytes that your body needs
You body runs smoothly with specific electrolytes. Without balanced electrolytes, your body has a hard time absorbing water thus leading to you being a sad, wrinkly raisin.
When you sweat or expel any liquid from you’re body, you are also releasing salts or minerals that makes your body function smoothly.
The most important minerals (aka electrolytes) your body needs are:
But how do you get all those electrolytes you ask!
It sounds intimidating but with a balanced diet you get all that you need from the food you eat.
Of course sometimes your salts just feel off. Maybe you did an extra strenuous hike or spent a lot of time sticking to a plastic chair today. If you sweat more than normal one day this is the perfect time to enjoy this watermelon drink recipe.
Watermelon is super high in several types of electrolytes as is strawberries
. It’s a light flavor with no artificial sweeteners making it refreshing and hydrating without having to risk a sugar crash (which feels awful when you’re still thirsty)!
Best Fruits for Your Electrolyte Drink
Strawberries are easily accessible and 100% delicious.
But sometimes they aren’t in season. (Seriously, how many times are the strawberries super sad looking at the grocery store).
Or maybe you’re horribly unfortunate and are extremely allergic to strawberries. #sosad
So if you find yourself in one of these situations where strawberries simply aren’t the answer, don’t fret, there are plenty, PLENTY of other fruits just as tasty you can substitute that are more on budget.
Of course this will obviously change the coloring, look, and taste (duh) of the drink slightly but it’ll all still be deliciously perfect!
And on the plus side, it gives you endless variations of your watermelon refresher drink to test out.
(the list goes on and on….and on).
Don’t be afraid to get creative! Pretty much every fruit and vegetable out there will have some kind of electrolyte that will be beneficial to you. So even if you want to try some cucumber or even some basil it’d still be beneficial.
Materials for Your Refreshing Watermelon Drink Recipe
Honestly I love this pitcher. It’s heat safe, cold safe, and dishwasher safe, so you know it’s versatile. It also has a strainer built into the lid which strains out anything you don’t want like watermelon pulp or tea leaves.
Obviously it’s hard to make a blending drink without a blender…just sayin.
You’re going to need to strain out the majority of the watermelon parts after blending. First of all, you don’t want seeds and secondly, the watermelon flesh (is that what we call it) gets super grainy and gritty.
This set of three is perfect for that as well as for a bunch of other uses in the kitchen (like sprinkling powdered sugar and cleaning berries).

It doesn’t matter how active or unactive your lifestyle is. You can still easily become that sad dehydrated raisin. And a sad dehydrated raisin is moody, tired, and definitely not living her best life.
Don’t be that sad raisin, stay hydrated this summer. Stay refreshed and enjoy the “legs sticking to plastic chairs” season. Because soon it will be winter again and you’ll once again wish you had taken more advantage of the sunshine and summer activities.
