  • Clean your apples and peel them. Cut your apples into thin uniform-sized slices. Toss the slices in lemon juice and put them in a pot.
  • Add all of the ingredients into the pot and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the liquid by bringing it to simmer for about 30 to 35 minutes.
  • Your end product should be soft and tender apples. Once you have achieved the end product remove the filling from heat and leave it to cool for about 30 minutes.
  • Place them in the fridge if you want to use the filling in the same week. But if you want to store it for longer put the filling in airtight glass jars and place them in the freezer.

Note 2: In step 2, if you have too much liquid, remove the lid of the pot and let the mixture simmer for another 10 minutes.
Note 3: Butter is used as a flavor enhancer; you can skip it if you want to stick to the classic canned pie filling recipe.
Note 4: Sealed apple pie filling can be used for a whole year.
Note 5: If you want to make a thick apple pie filling you can add a little more cornstarch. Keep adding it when the mixture is boiling until your preferred consistency has been achieved.
